The Story Behind Splyno
Like many home improvement projects, Splyno started with a simple idea — and a bit of frustration.
A few summers ago, I set out to screen in the area under my deck to make better use of the space by my walkout basement. I picked up DIY screen parts from a local big box home improvement store, figuring it would be a straightforward weekend project.
It wasn’t.
After hours of wrestling with spline, trying to keep the screen tight, and struggling to align multiple parts while everything wanted to move at once — I thought, there has to be a better way.
From Frustration to Innovation
That evening, I took the three-piece system and modeled it in CAD. I wanted to simplify it — to design something that did the same job with fewer parts, fewer tools, and fewer headaches.
The result was a single-extrusion design with built-in flexible living hinges and a spline integrated into a flexible arm. This hinge gave the installer a “third hand,” making it easy to hold the screen and spline in place while attaching it to the framing.
Later, I added a snap-down cover — not only to give the system a clean, finished look but also to help tension the screen for a perfect, tight fit.
Built, Tested, and Proven in Indiana
The entire concept was developed, refined, and manufactured right here in Indiana. I first tested the parts on my own front porch, screening it in completely using the new Splyno system.
From there, we conducted weatherization and durability testing in our lab to confirm its performance over time. Other employees and friends used it on their homes too — on flat frames, under porches, and in new builds. Each installation made the design better, simpler, and stronger.
